The best job in the world!

Posted by Rithish

When I first heard of the island reef job in early Jan, my first thought was that this was a marketing gimmick; and nothing more. The website reported that the responsibilities included feeding fish in the Great Barrier Reef; trying out the luxuries of a spa; snorkeling and diving; and writing a weekly report on the findings of interest along the Reef.

I mean.. WoW!

And then when I was lazing through the newspaper while having coffee this morning, I read a news item that the job is now closed. I also come to know that a Bangalore RJ was among the finalists; but an ostrich-rider from England beat him to it!

Congratulations to Ben! He has been appointed for The Best job in the World!

for me; and then, for a cause

It's my birthday today... I get to have a wish then; don't I? What's that you say? You know me well enough to say NO; eh? :-P

In contrast to my usual selfish nature; this time round, I ask you to do something for the world.

Tonight, switch off your lights for an hour between 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM to celebrate Earth Hour. Sadly though, I won't be around to stand by your side; as I would be fast asleep and travelling. But not to worry! Aamir Khan and people from 800 cities across 85 countries will be with you during this hour. :-)

More information on this can be found at http://earthhour.in/

take a cruise across the ocean. or wait, maybe kayak?

Abhishek pointed me to an interesting link. It was for driving directions on google maps from Seattle to Honalulu; right across the Pacific ocean. The amount of data they have; and the ways they find to crunch it. These guys never cease to amaze me.

Other than that, what I really liked is this (click on the image for a bigger picture) -

Apart turning left on this road and turning right on that; google recommends you to kayak 4000 odd kms across the Pacific. Given that it estimates about 14 days and 6 hours for you to reach your destination; I would like to believe the 14 days are for kayaking itself, even for a guy in supreme fitness like me.

If the image appears blurred, then you can catch the action here. Maybe you could brave yourself to walk. You can't escape the kayaking though even then. :o)

philosophy in the age of recession

akka Mahadevi avru helalilva

bettada mele mane madi mrugagalige hedara baradu anta
hage software profession nalli idda mele layoffs ge hedera baradu

Sister Mahadevi person has said-no
hills up house building, then for animals fearing should not happening
likewise software profession in happening after, layoffs for fearing should not

*Ahem* That was the best I could do with the translation. I didn't want to take the philosophical edge out of Harsha's words. Harsha is one of my best buds since school. Yeah! The same guy who voted against me due to his Gandhigiri. So, let it be known that I lost the school election 'cos of what Harsha did (lost by a single vote); but let it also be known that am a better man today 'cos of what Harsha did. [If you've been following my contemplations over the years, you'll know what I mean].

But I digress. The point of contemplation is not Harsha and his Gandhian philosophies. The point to ponder on is what's up with the crises we have at hand. Obviously, if I had taken up economics in college, and had the intellect to put it all together, I would be giving you a deep insight into what's been happening around, instead of this pointless tirade. For the same reason, as my dear friend Abhishek has suggested, I've decided to pick a copy of Freakonomics the next time I venture into a bookstore.

But I digress again. Let's look at what has made the crises at hand. Production lines are being cut as there are no sales. Stock markets are down. Companies are laying off their employees in order to make profits. Commodities are becoming costlier. Do you see a common denominator here? Yes, you clever people. I could kiss you for that. It is money. It is money! Cash! duddu! hana! paisa!

Where has the money gone? The money was there when the economy was booming a couple of years earlier. Heck, it was right there a few months back too. It couldn't have just vanished into thin air!

Rest assured dear folks, that the money is still there. And it will rear up when everything is hunky-dory again. The money is right there in our tight purses. Productions have stopped 'cos sales have reduced. Sales have reduced 'cos people don't buy. Stocks are down 'cos people don't invest. Do you see a pattern here? Yes, it's the people. It is us! We! I! You! Everyone!

We have lost the faith we had in the economy a few months back. We have lost the trust, and we look on in fear of what could be happening ahead. We dread the future, when in actuality we are in a position to script it as we want.

But then again, I could just be a maverick. A freak, would be more apt. I could probably take this as a lame excuse for buying a car. But hey! I have done my bit to keep the economy rolling. Have you?!!?

skewed stats of a skewed world

I don't believe this!!! My tech blog gets more traction than my personal one.

Not that my contemplations *ahem* are that interesting to warrant people's interest in them; but I neither write any record-breaking stuff or apocalyptic information in my tech blog for people to be visiting from far-and-wide. For the pizza delivery boy's sake, I've only 4 posts there.

Either, it's a total geeky world out there; or people are stumbling on it by mistake. I will go with the former as it goes well with the ego. You prefer to choose the latter?!!? Thank you.

Now don't you go peeking there to see what crazy stuff I've put. I have enough skewed stats already. Oh What the heck!!! Go ahead!!! Skew them some more...

the world is getting to be a strange place

As reported in the Times of India dated July 23, 2008 -
Man blows up apartment spraying for bugs: A New Jersey man trying to kill insects in his apartment blew it up instead, the New York Daily News reported. Isias Maceda was unhurt in the incident, but 80% of his apartment was destroyed. The accident occurred as Maceda was spraying for pests in his kitchen. Somehow the bug spray ignited a blast that triggered a fire.

And yet another -
Men sentenced for setting friend’s crotch ablaze: Two practical jokers are behind bars for setting their passed-out drinking buddy’s crotch ablaze while boozing in Grover Beach. The men poured cologne on Elliot Tuleja’s groin and set him on fire.

What is this world coming to, I say?!!?
